I'm not writing this to tell you where supplies are, so much as I am trying to get you to think on your feet. With that said, let's create a scenario, and discuss your thought process when it comes to finding essential items.
*Disclaimer. This is just a discussion, there are no real disasters happening at this time, and the team here at Disaster Preparedness Initiative do not encourage looting, theft, or tactical acquisition of goods or property. Stealing is a crime.
Okay, now that our little disclaimer is out of the way, let's get down to it.
It's the year 20XX, your country was invaded by the evil dictator from (nameless country) and you're on the run. Your group has found a nice little hiding spot way off in the middle of "Ain't gonna be found anytime soon land." Your party has some things to keep them going, but, supplies are dwindling, so you decided to strike out and do some hunting and gathering. The group chose you because of your quick wit, and your ability to get in and out of trouble just as easy as flipping a switch. Miles away, there's a pretty decent sized city, where you set your sights on finding goodies. It's obvious that the main places for finding anything good have been hit, so you decide to cross off the pharmacies, grocery stores, and other shops like Walmart and such. Where are you going to look for stuff that could potentially save the farm?
I'll start.
Where: New car dealerships.
Why: Not quite the place to look for survival goods.
What: Bottled water, coffee, fuel, tools, large first aid kits, potentially even a defibrillator.
Start in the customer lounge area, there's usually a coffee maker, and complimentary bottles of water available. Oftentimes you may find soda pop in these places too. Look in closets nearby for their stock of extra filters, cans of coffee, cases of water and other random supplies. Head down to the parts department, and you'll likely find spare parts for vehicles, as well as accessories such as shirts, hats, jackets with their brand name embroidered on them. Check the shop, you could find gas cans, and most definitely find tools that you could use to maintain your fleet or even around the home. Look around, you will find large first aid kits too. Heading back near the lobby, you may find mounted to the wall a portable defibrillator. These may become a lifesaver, and shouldn't be passed up if you can carry it. They do have instructions printed on them, and are fairly automatic, so even the untrained could use them. You could raid the locker room, and grab uniforms for more durable work clothes. Over in the detail area, you'll find softer towels and rags, which can be useful for various tasks, much like the rags found in the vehicle maintenance area, without the risk of metal shavings that could cause injury. Now, head towards the sales offices, and you should find a locked box that contain keys. Obviously, it's locked, but, that's okay, you found tools to fix that problem. In the box, you'll likely find the keys to every new vehicle on the lot. Why don't you grab something with four wheel drive, or all wheel drive? Something to carry your bounty back to your hideout. Pay attention, some dealerships have above ground fuel tanks. Look and see if you can't top off your tank before you leave. These tanks may not need power to dispense the fuel as they are gravity fed. Just look and make sure there's no lock on the fuel nozzle, or you may have to either search for a key, either in the key locker, or in the manager's desk. If neither can be found, you may need to go back to the shop and find something to break the lock.
